What Do You Look For in a Community Organizer?

Organizers must have a deep desire to address local and regional societal issues, organize a congregation base, find leaders, and organize people and money to sustain the organization. Organizers must be self-motivated, systemic thinkers and possess the ability to take risks. The position is not a social service or public relations position.

Skills: Knowledge of political process/agendas; leadership training, strong communication/writing skills; ability to handle diversity, and work with diverse groups; ability to build key relationships with the leadership of congregations, developing alliances while remaining independent, and promoting a social justice agenda. Ability to speak Spanish is a plus. Some openings are for a Lead Organizer. The candidates for the Lead Organizer must have rich experiences in community involvement, experience in organizing and have the ability to manage an organization’s financial and organizational development. The candidate must have experience in organizing congregation/community, union organizations, or electoral or GOTV activities and must be computer literate.

Organizers will be trained by the network, and will be reviewed in accordance with their related competencies and experiences. A special screening will be scheduled for finalist, usually at the city seeking the candidates. Orientation will be provided, and week long training is mandatory most times.
